DWLT 3: Microscopic Traffic Flow Simulation

A microscopic traffic flow simulation model for Magdeburg is developed using the open-source software SUMO. The first version calculates all trips done by vehicles (cars, buses and trains) on an average day based on real historical data and latest schedule changes. The vehicles' trajectories are then visualised within the digital twin's dashboard. The model's second version is supposed to test the integration of real-time traffic data from traffic cameras in the living lab to mirror the current situation and to, e.g., enable ad-hoc simulations for traffic prognosis.

Main Goals:

  • Developing a SUMO traffic model for the whole city of Magdeburg
  • Integrating real-time data from traffic cameras and other sensors for online calibration and simulation of the traffic model
  • Simulation of public transport (trams and buses) to predict current departure times and delays
  • Focus on open-data usage and standardisation of pre-developed processes regarding the model's transferability to other regions
